Youth Observation

Updated: Dec 6, 2018

The average person spends about 20 years total in educational settings, and beyond that are expanding our minds to learn every other day. Thinking that 7 billion people have so much information to retain, it seems impossible that everyone can process information identically to one other. The beginning of the development of our education beginnings in an Elementary setting. Last week, a classmate and myself visited our local Elementary School and observed different interactive leveled classrooms. We spent time in 3 5th grade classrooms, one project based class, one standardized lecture based class, and one in-between-styles class.

The first classroom I observed was in between of a lecture and project styled class. The teacher stood in front of the class and had an interactive, conversation based lesson with the students. The students were seated in taller tables than regular desk with fidget bars installed at the feet of each one. Even though the class was interactive between the teacher and the students, the students were only asked to take out their whiteboards once. This showed a minority

of hands on learning within the classroom.

The second classroom I visited was described as a more individually focused classroom. During my visit, the students were dispersed around the classroom based on their personal benefit. Some kids sat at their desk, some kids sat at counters, some lay on the carpet, some sit in bean bags in the corner surrounded by stuffed animals. Yet all these students filled the classroom with an excited energy of education. All students were able to be productive by themselves. Also, the teacher roamed around the room to be in aid of the students when they need without lecturing the content.
